Our first meal in Firenze....and our best. Celia and I ate there twice and on our third try were too late.....and then we cried. Until our return, we send lovely greetings.

A real authentic Italian Panino. Lots to choose from, fresh ingredients, and simple - the definition of Italian cuisine. The lardo is a personal favorite of mine. Nothing fancy here, just a great panino. For 2,50EURO this is a great value.

Stay away from the tourist trap restaurants in the plaza and eat good, cheap, paninis from this hole in the wall right in the centre of Florence.

Divina Cucina
Probably the smallest wine bar in Florence. Opened in 1875, it's one of the most fun! Locals refer to it by the nickname "I Gemellini". Push your way up to the bar (say "Permesso" as you pass), and order one of the wines they've opened for sampling. Choose something from their menu, a crostini or sandwich, and work your way back out onto the street. Fortunately, there's no traffic and you can enjoy the scene. In the bar, there's a wooden glass holder on the wall where you can rest your glass while eating. Spaces are numbered to help you remember which is yours! When you're done, head back up the block to Perché No ice cream parlor on Via Tavolini.

We stopped in to see Amando during a busy day in Florence. Love the sandwich and love the price - 5 euro for a sandwich and wine. It's not a 12 inch subway sub - but then again in Italy portions are not yet X-large, thankfully. We have a nice video of our lunch and friend Amando on our website. Enjoy.

Before heading to Florence I searched for good, inexpensive local food. I Fratellini sounded too good to pass up. When I showed the description to my wife she agreeded and we added it to our must see (and taste) destinations in Florence.

We followed our map through the winding streets and noticed a small crowd of people outside one of the shops. That was our destination. The November crowd seemed to be mostly college student regulars, locals and a few tourists.

The line moved quickly. By the time I had browsed the list of sandwiches it was my turn to order. Proscuitto di Parma and soft cheese, a Tuna with Tomato and Onion and two glasses of Chianti (8 euro total). It was our favorite lunch on our 7 day trip to Italy.

Don't be scared off because there is no seating. If you don't want to stand and eat you can sit on a curb or take a short walk to find a bench to sit down and relax.

While studying abroad in Florence, I was a frequent customer of Il due Fratellini. Something about the sandwiches are like no other, and gave me a taste of home. Some day when I make it back to Florence that is one of the first places I will go to. Thanks so much!!
